Description
A mechanical inspector should be familiar with certain types of failure mechanisms, whereas he can describe what he saw to the engineer. Too often any wastage of metal is called corrosion, and that is not always the case. Erosion exhibits itself by a smooth profile and is the loss of cross-sectional thickness by a wearing away process. Corrosion is a chemical attack due to a reaction with the base metal and the chemical it sees. These are different examples of cross-sectional loss.
