What You Do With Your Life, Is In Your Hands!!

CWI

Too often we want to blame everyone else, but ourselves for not achieving what other people accomplish.  Look in the mirror and you will find the one person that is totally responsible for your success.   It can’t always be your family, your educators, your boss, your co-workers, your circumstance for you not getting ahead.  You play the most important role in that endeavor.  What you need to do is to get a plan, learn to work well with others, be on time and be ready to work every day.  Improve your abilities, use all the skills that you have developed, and be willing to perform any task, no matter whether you think it is below your station or not.  Before I had spent a year in inspection, I had already read every code book I could get my hands on.  ASME, API, AWS, ASNT or whatever was available to me on my jobsite.  Sure I didn’t always have inspections requiring this knowledge, but I knew at some time this information would come in handy and it did.  I carry AWS, API, ASNT National certifications in multiple disciplines, but if you need for me to clean restrooms, I am ready to accomplish that task.  Success is simple, work hard and smart.  You are the captain of your own boat, so steer it in the direction you want to go.

Sundt Construction in Farmington, NM is looking for a couple of Certified Welding Inspectors (CWI).  Information and rate of pay can be discussed with Pete Wilcox @ 915.887.1771.  Work will consist of elevated work.

The latest news concerning the AWS examination is that in September 2017, they are going to start testing the Part A Fundamentals and Part C Code on computers with a company called Prometrics.

Tips to Help You Pass the CWI Examination

Tips:    Tri-gas are mixtures of helium, argon and CO2 for welding Stainless Steel.  A Caulk weld is a seal weld.  A Brazed Specimen can be tested by the peel test, ultrasonically or Eddy Current process.  PRT stands for Proof Testing.  Coalescence means joining or growing together.  Fisheye a discontinuity attributed to hydrogen in the weld.  It is a small pore surrounded by a shiny, bright area.  It is hydrogen, not nickel in the weld.  Cracked tacks should be ground out and rewelded.  When using the protractor subtract the lower number you read off of the protractor from 90 degrees and that will be your bevel angle. Don't forget to refresh yourself on weld symbols as it may also show up on the Specification B exam.  A question that may come up is, if a welder is qualified for a particular WQTR and WPS, what other WPS's is he/she qualified to weld?  He is qualified for any other WPS that has the same variables that he tested too.  You may see a UT instrument with a transducer sitting on a block of steel with holes.  They are calibrating the instrument.  Two J-grooves welded together form a U-groove.  The hesitation on a tensile graph is when the material has reached its yield.  Look at the PQR to determine limits on the Post Weld Heat Treatment chart.  You should be prepared to work in Celsius or Fahrenheit.  Before you jump, you should read the question well, read all the answers and then start the process of finding a solution to the question.  Look for double answers, there may be two correct answers, one in the English system and one in the Metric system.    Make sure that you mark the correct answer in the proper place on the scantron.  Marking the scantron answer in the wrong location can be devastating.  Check and verify that you are marking the correct location on the scantron for each question.  **Remember that a WPS is a range for the welder to follow and the PQR is the list of the actual facts that gives validity and support to the WPS.  Table 6 of the new Specification "B" list the things that must be addressed on the WPS, if applicable, Table 7 gives the thickness qualified based on actual thickness of the test specimen and Table 8 list the Essential Variables that will require the WPS and PQR to be requalified.  GMAW short circuiting and a bead thickness of 1/2" or less will limit the thickness qualified to 1.1 times the weld metal thickness deposited in the weldment.  Always pay attention to the footnotes when short circuiting is one of the requirements.  An E7018 is an A-1 ferrous weld metal used for welding low-carbon steel.  Remember that there are no nick breaks required on a Mechanized Welding with Filler Metal Additions for the WPS or Welding operator test.  When a welder welds an A106 Gr. A material, then he/she is qualified to weld any material with an M-1 to an M-11 designation.   When a bend specimen’s weld is not ground completely down and there is a fracture in the bend radius after bending that is not acceptable, what should be done?  The test fails!   Be prepared to see a picture of a UT thickness gauge with a bottle setting to the left of the instrument.  You may be asked what is in this bottle.  It is a bottle of couplant used for connecting the transducer to the piece being examined.  A question came in the other day about if a welder tested on A106 Gr. C material, is he qualified to weld A36 plate.  The answer is yes.  Another question came in that when a tensile graph is being displayed and it hesitates at 17,000 psi and then goes on to 28,000 psi and then drops off, what is the point at which the specimen fails.  It fails at 28,000 psi.  Be careful when you measure the 4.50” O.D. coupon for wall thickness.  I have been told that they now have one side as schedule 80 and the other side is schedule 120.  Check both sides.  Remember that on any tensile test, the lower tensile strength of the component, whether it is the base material or filler metal is what the Ultimate Tensile Strength must meet.  You are allowed a minimum under-tolerance of 5% if it breaks in the base material.  This does not apply, if it breaks in the weld metal or fusion zone.  In this case it must meet the minimum specified tensile.  There was a MT yoke and a dry powder bulb on one of the drawings.  Remember this is a MT dry method examination.
